Fountain pens in Singapore FAQ

Hi! Thanks for dropping by. This FAQ is here mostly as a historical curiosity and is hopelessly outdated. The last major update was in Oct 2011. A lot has happened since ๐Ÿ™‚

If you’re in Singapore and have fountain pen-related questions, it’s better and quicker to ask on the Facebook Group – Singapore Fountain Pen Lovers. There’s also a monthly meetup.

1. OVERVIEW

In general, most pen brands aren’t cheaper in Singapore. Most stores sell at full retail. Major department stores and bookshops tend to have pen counters. Common brands represented: Sheaffer, Parker, Waterman, Cross and Lamy.

If you’re looking for deals, it’s better to look online. Pens can be cheaper even after taking shipping into account. Try:

Pen Galleryhttp://www.pengallery.com/
(they’ve a great store in brick-and-mortar store in KL too)

Pensinasiahttp://www.pensinasia.com/
(Folks on FPN have also reported good dealings with PensinAsia too.)

If you know what you want and you’re in Singapore you can try Mustafa (see Pen Shops), open 24 hours. If you’re a tourist – shopping at Mustafa Centre is an experience in itself ๐Ÿ˜€

2. PEN SHOPS

Arthur aka “House Of Pens” maintains a list of current pen shops with photos and a map too!

http://houseofpens.blogspot.com/2009/11/singapore-pen-tour-2009.html

Here’s a selection —

Aesthetic Bay
http://www.aestheticbay.com/

No. 2 Orchard Turn
#04-14, ION Orchard
Singapore 238801
Tel: +65 6735 6788
Fax: +65 6235 6788

Aesthetic Bay also runs Singapore’s only Graf von Faber-Castell boutique, just next door.

Thanks to the efforts of Mr Tan Fong Kum, the owner, we’ve had 2 pen clinics in Singapore so far! YOSHIDA Shinichi from Nakaya in July 2009 and NAGAHARA Yukio in Jan 2010.

Fook Hing Trading Co.
Blk 231 Bain St.
#01-23, Bras Basah Complex
Singapore 180231

Prices for vintage pens are very high relative to what’s online. For modern pens, their prices are comparable with Aesthetic Bay’s.

Prestige Time

Website: http://www.elephant-coral.com/

Possibly the most expensive pen shop around, with an extremely posh image.

Lin Kong Watch & Pen
111 North Bridge Rd
#03-53 Peninsula Plaza
Singapore 179098
Telephone: (65)-63383626

The website is run by the daughter of the owners – herself a businesswoman with her own separate pen business.

Mustafa Centre
145 Syed Alwi Road
Singapore – 207704
Tel: +65-62955855

Not a pen shop, but worth mentioning for its great prices and decent variety. Major pen brands all represented and prices are a little lower. Service is non-existent – no dipping or trying. Best if you know what you want already and are just looking for a deal. Be thick-skinned.

It’s also the only place in Singapore that sells Hero 336s (for S$1.20 each!), the Pilot eyedropper that graceaj loves so much ๐Ÿ™‚ (S$7), and more.

There’re 3 pen counters: 2 on the first floor of either building, and another in the stationery section on the fourth floor.

3. VINTAGE / OLDER PENS

Also see the FLEA MARKETS section.

Pek Kay Lee
Blk 34 Upper Cross St
#02-132
Singapore 050034

From tankahn: “The elderly store owner has Parker 51s. Also Sheaffer PFMs with weak rubber sacs which needs restoration. Do not go to the next shop.”

Fook Hing Trading Co
(see Pen Shops)

Some Singaporeans sell their vintage pens online:

Yong
http://fp-writings.blogspot.com/

The prices on his site are in US$ btw.

From Richard Fan: “bought b4 – but pls note if you go to “green-board” you will his prices slashed by further +30%, so check there before buying asking price – i discovered this after i paid original asking price . . heโ€™s friendly & best thing is you can test the pen before buying”

====================

4. CHEAP FOUNTAIN PENS

Cheapies have their charms too!

– Hero 336 – S$1.20 at Mustafa
– Pilot V-pen / Varsity – around S$2.50 at most Popular bookstores, stationery stores
– Platinum Preppy – S$3.30 at Kinokuniya (Ngee Ann City) and Isetan Scotts 3F
– Pilot “Tank pen” eyedropper. Japanese M / Western F nib only – S$7 at Mustafa
– Pilot – (Model 2A clone?) – with squeeze filler. Japanese M / Western F nib only – S$7 at Mustafa
– Platinum Riviere – S$2 at Daiso (from tankahn)
– Daiso house brand fountain pen – S$2 from, er, Daiso. (see below)

Daiso
Japan’s largest franchise of 100 yen shops has stores in Singapore too. Every item is priced at S$2 each.

(Also see tankahn’s FPN post.)

Hero and other China brands

From tt32003: “Also found a stationary shop at second floor Punggol Plaza selling cheap Heros and other brand Chinese fountain pens. These are not the 336 type but with new designs and finishings. Around $5 each. Art friend at Taka has many cheap German made [My comment: Berlitz or Diplomat] fountain pens, around $10 or less.

(Guess you never know where those Chinese pens will turn up.)

====================

5. FLEA MARKETS

Cash Converters
This is a chain of thrift stores in Singapore, with stores around the island. Click for their website.

From tt32003: “Lastly sometimes at cash converter can find good used pen but really depens on your luck.

====================

6. SPECIFIC PENS AND PARTS

(Also see 4. Where can I find cheap fountain pens?)

Lamy nibs
For Lamy nibs, try Lin Kong, Prestige Time or Fook Hing (thanks Nic!) (see Pen Shops above)

How do you change a Lamy nib? Instructions here.

Pilot Prera
Kinokuniya stationery branches (see Paper section).

====================

7. INK

You can fill most of your ink needs at the major pen shops here or at pen counters in department stores. (see Pen Shops).

Noodler’s Singapore colors
Only Aesthetic Bay (see Pen Shops) stocks Noodler’s Ink. The owner commissioned the Singapore colors line from Nathan Tardiff. But they don’t seem to sell online anymore…

Fortunately, Pensinasia offers them online. Also check out the relevant FPN thread.

Pilot Iroshizuku
Also stocked by Aesthetic Bay (see Pen Shops).

Pelikan 4001
Available just about everywhere, including Mustafa – 4th floor, stationery section.

J Herbin
At last! NBC Marketing now stocks J Herbin inks – bottles and cartridges – and J Herbin accessories in their new store at Ngee Ann City. (see Pen Shops)

8. PAPER

tankahn recommends: “For papers, I am using Giant Hypermarket store branded superior multi-purpose paper (70gsm) which I found to be FP friendly. Once you find papers you like best, buy them in A4 size pads and get them hand stitched. The society for physically disabled http://www.spd.org.sg provides book binding service. I got my Rhodia pads made into Moleskine size journals.”

Japanese brands

Kinokuniya (Main Store)
391 Orchard Road Ngee Ann City
#03-10/15 Takashimaya Shopping Centre
Singapore 238872
Tel: (65)6737-5021
(Opening hours: Sun to Fri – 10am to 9.30pm & Sat – 10am to 10pm)

Kinokuniya (Liang Court)

#03-50 Liang Court
Singapore 179036
Tel: (65)6337-1300
(Opening hours: Daily – 10.30am to 9.30pm)

The stationery sections are actually managed by another company called NBC Marketing. They have their own stores as well.

The Raffles City one is well-stocked too. It’s in the basement, next to the escalator down to Esplanade MRT:

NBC Marketing
252 North Bridge Rd
Raffles City

The Stationery Superstore in Funan the IT Mall stocks Kokuyo and Maruman notebooks and paper.

Stationery Superstore
#02-23/29 Funan Digitalife Mall
109 North Bridge Rd
Tel: 63323870

Grandluxe / Paperluxe
A good alternative to Moleskines. Better paper, but fewer pages. Available at most bookstores.

Miquelrius
Stocked at NBC and Kinokuniya.

Moleskine
Moleskine paper tends to be too thin for fountain pens, but they’re available in almost every bookstore.

Nightingale
Available at Mustafa and Kinokuniya (see Pen Shops)

From graceaj: “There are also the Nightingale notebooks recommended by tankahn at Mustafa. The 3-section notebooks use a paper similar to those in the Handbook, just 10gsm lighter. These come in hardbound and spiral versions in a few sizes. Only thing is the book is divided into 3 sections with ruled, blank and gridded pages, which not everyone may like.”

9. PEN REPAIR TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

None since Chan Kwong Kee in South Bridge Road closed :/

10. REPAIRS

Other than returning your poor pen to the distributor (see Distributors), you can try Pek Kay Lee. (see Vintage Pens)

As far as I know, there’re no active nibmeisters in Singapore.

Uncle Goh at China Square Central Flea Market

A seller who had a table at China Square Central some Sundays. No apparent regular schedule. He’s polite and it’s always a pleasure browsing. But not all his pens are in working condition or have accurate parts. Buyer beware.

From Richard Fan: “level 2 next to secondary escalator – not main one -, after 12pm, has plenty of old pens – bought quite a few – hit & miss, always caveat emptor – for me flexy nib is important so i need to see & test b4 buying, thats why online for me is discouraging – but after the missus here, online is next step for me cos i am onto a certain brand & nib . . .but go check it out, you will bump into other collectors”

  1. Who are you knowledgeable one???
am very pleasantly surprised to discover this blog, thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

    10. Flea Market
Try Sunday ONLY China Square Flea Market level 2 next to secondary escalator – not main one -, after 12pm, has plenty of old pens – bought quite a few – hit & miss, always caveat emptor – for me flexy nib is important so i need to see & test b4 buying, thats why online for me is discouraging – but after the missus here, online is next step for me cos i am onto a certain brand & nib . . .but go check it out, you will bump into other collectors

  2. Hi. Where is Lin Kong and Pek Kay Lee located ?
    Bras Basah ?
The Google Map link doesn’t work anymore.

  3. After reading your post, I went to Mustafa looking for pens, their Hero 336 looked exactly the same as my Hover H331 (bought in Batam), Pilot also quite similar. They sell Lamy Vista, but I can’t find the XF one. Then I went to Kinokuniya and bought three Petit 1 $1.80 and three Preppy $3.40

Thanks for your post, very informative.

  4. Hi just like to add some info.

Found Sailor ink pen (not the ink bar) selling for $2 each at Daiso. Uses Sailor cartridges.

Also found a stationary shop at second floor Punggol Plaza selling cheap Heros and other brand Chinese fountain pens. These are not the 336 type but with new designs and finishings. Around $5 each.

Art friend at Taka has many cheap German made fountain pens, around $10 or less.

Lastly sometimes at cash converter can find good used pen but really depens on your luck.
The harley Davidson 96 limited edition that cash converter is selling now at $35 is really not bad.

  5. Thanks for putting my contribution in there. Daiso must be added to your faq list. I found Platinum Riviere pen there. Nib size is medium 0.5mm and is only $2.00 each. There is another disposable fountain pen with 0.5mm nib. Its in Japanese but the packing says “fountain pen”. Daiso have a little shelf full of little containers such as atomisers and small liquid soap dispensers. You can find fat syringes with pipettes there, very useful for refilling your pen cartridges. Don’t worry if you can find any as stocks turnover are high. I found them after making 5 trips.

  6. Carrefour at Suntec City have Rhodia pads for sale. They have only the blank A4 pads left. But its cheaper at around $8.50 per pad compared to other places like Tango Mango or Kinokuniya at Suntec city. Hopefully we can ask the French owned store to bring more in.

Mustafa is bringing in full range of Nightingales journals. I bought their “handbook”. I will be using them from now on. Its cheap at $5.80 each. The paper is highly absorbent but bleed proof for my wettest writers, but this is at the expense of shading which is an acceptable compromise for me. The paper is unlined but all you need to do is to print a loose leaf guide sheet and stick like a bookmark. The paper is transparent enough if you print thick guide lines.

I bought what little they have. I am hoping that will fool their stock control system and make them do a large order next time round so more of you can appreciate them.

  7. Hi. Does anyone know if the Sailor pen from Daiso can use the regular cartridge? The packaging says use Sailor one only. Thanks.

  8. Oops! Thanks for the info! BTW, does anyone know how much Mustafa sells the Lamy Safari for? I called them earlier today but they couldn’t understand me. Passed the phone around ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  9. i got the lamy safari for around 35 bucks from mustafa in Oct. It was on offer.

I went back mustafa in Nov and it was selling at 47 bucks

  10. Hello,

    Some random information

Kenny from Books Actually has stopped stocking up on Rhodia E -pure journals and told me offhandedly that he will be stocking up on Field Notes in January 2009. In the mean time, if you really want to try Field Notes – they are available at Casual Poet for about $17-18 for set of 3.

    Casual Poet

  11. Hi, Prestige Time at Bras Basah sells pens too, not just watches :). Got a Pelikan M200 from them recently at a good price. They have Parker 45 and other pens as well, both new old stock and new. No affiliations, just a satisfied customer.

  12. Carrefour at Plaza Singapura has the Peforated pads and stapled books at the end of the stationery aisle. I’ve been back a few times and the stocks are still plentiful.

There are also the Nightingale notebooks recommended by tankahn at Mustafa. The 3-section notebooks use a paper similar to those in the Handbook, just 10gsm lighter. These come in hardbound and spiral versions in a few sizes. Only thing is the book is divided into 3 sections with ruled, blank and gridded pages, which not everyone may like. Personally I find them useful for school, where I use one notebook for each subject and use one section for note-taking, one for revision, and another for project notes and dates.

    1. Grace, have you seen any โ€˜Peforated pads and stapled booksโ€™ at Carrefour recently? Many thanks for sharing.

  13. I wonder who brings in Cross Pens. Just submitted one for repair to Times where I bought it. The clip broke off…. Haven’t got back to me.

  14. Mustafa has the Tank and 2A clone in F now. Also, it has been mentioned on FPN that the 2A clone is known as the Pilot Superior.

  15. is this the address for sin ghee?

  16. I didn’t see it mentioned, but Muji has some blank spiral-bound notebooks that are pretty FP-friendly. Kinokuniya also has some Nightingales, including the small Handbooks.

  17. I found the ladies – Juliana and Rika- at Elephant & Coral (Wheelock) not the least bit intimidating. They’re friendly, helpful and allow you to hold fifteen grand’s worth of pen even if you have no intention or means to purchase. They’re real enthusiasts, and know their pens. Don’t be put off: visit for a treat. At present (May 09) they have 20% off on Faber Castell guilloche pens.

BTW there’s a Lin Kong in Parkway Plaza too: sells usual Sheaffer and Parker, but also ST Dupont, Cartier and Montegrappa. Unlike Elephant & Coral, they pay you no attention at all when you walk into the shop to drool over a Montegrappa.

  18. Visited Mustafa today; they have the new Orange Lamy Safaris in stock, as well as Parker 45s going for $39.

  19. went to mustafa yesterday. saw and bought the pilot tank and the birdie. but the 2a clone was nowhere to be found… anybody has any info?

    1. I was there just a few days ago. Try the pen counter in the stationery department on Lvl 4. The 2A clones look similar to the eyedropper models so keep your eyes peeled ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. yikes. i’m mistaken! realised what i bought was the 2A clone.
so it’s the tank i’m looking for. think graceaj mentioned its on level 1 of the serangoon plaza outlet. will update everyone when successful!

  21. I want to send my Parker fountain pen for repair.

I am staying in Eastern part of Singapore.

Please let me know where can I send.

    Many tks

    Eric

  22. There’s quite a big range of rhodia pads in kinokuniya. What paper do they use? The preppys are running out. They sell pilot ‘drawing’ ink, lamy big bottles and parker ink.

    1. Overjoyed is now the official distributor of Rhodia/Clairefontaine/J. Herbin/Brausse/G. Lalo products. You can find us at our retail store at Short Street (opening hours Monday to Friday 10am โ€“ 7pm, Saturdays 10am โ€“ 2pm, closed on Sundays & Public Holidays) and our web store atย http://www.overjoyed.com.sgย under Lifestyle -> Journals.

  23. Dear all,

Latest updates from the paper hunt:

MPH Raffles City B1 and Kinokuniya Taka have decent selection of Rhodia Pads and some Clairefontaine paper. NBC at Raffles City also has some Clairefontaine. Kino Taka has the best Maruman range (including refills).

The new shop at Ion called Prologue has a good selection of Rhodia pads and the best selection of Clairefontaine. They also have a good Kokuyo range (including refills). Definitely worth a visit. Better still, its just next to Aesthetic Bay, so you can pop by and get some ink (saw a good selection of the Pilot Iroshizuku inks there)!

  24. Have tried Rhodia, Mnemosyne, Cambridge and a whole lot of other expensive brands of paper.

U-Grade….proudly made in Singapore…is still be best I’ve ever used. No bleeding or feathering and the nip just glides over it.

Personally I use the A4 top spiral bound notebooks.

  25. i think the problem is that within each company, there are various grades of paper in different notebooks. but there isn’t an obvious description/branding for each type. the ugrade notebook i have is pretty bad. feathering, definite showthrough, some bleedthrough… best local experience for generic notepads is the g’earth so far…

  26. Hi all, just wanted to join in on the paper discussion here, I agree that most major local brands (Azone/U-grade/Grandluxe) seem to have varying finishes and qualities in their ranges. Tried U-grade as suggested but same experience as the one described above.

Only decent experience of mine has been with A’Zone “Elle Erre” ring notebooks which have a smooth cream paper. They are priced reasonable too.
Rest of the time its either Rhodia/Kokuyo.

  27. Platinum “Preppy” Fountain Pen price update.

As at 9th December 2009, each pen costs S$ 3.85 with GST.

    (I bought 3 of them. ^_^)

  28. After purchasing the Platinum โ€œPreppyโ€ fountain pen I also bought the Sailor Ink Pen.

Ink flow of the Sailor Ink Pen is good. The problem lies with the very smooth flowing Sailor ink (as with other very smooth flowing ink like Aurora) instead. The ink tends to spread into thicker line and also exhibits tendency to bleed through some types of writing paper.

Since the Sailor (and Aurora) ink needs certain sort of good quality paper, this restricts my application of this ink as I cannot always dictate the quality of paper accessible to me.

The nib is without pellet at the tip. This makes the Sailor Ink Pen “scratchy” on the paper.

The above problems do not happen to the Platinum “Preppy” fountain pen. The Platinum ink is more water-resistant than Sailor ink and the Platinum ink does not bleed through paper as much as the Sailor ink.

The nib of the Platinum “Preppy” is palleted to give a smooth writing experience.

An additional spring-loaded cone is inside the pen-cap of the Platinum “Preppy” to provide additional seal to the nib-section. This slows down evaporation of the ink. Intelligent design for even a cheap pen ! No such thought is put into the pen-cap of the Sailor Ink Pen.

Verdict : Platinum “Preppy” and Platinum ink are superior than Sailor Ink Pen and Sailor ink.

  29. Pilot Petit1 Fountain Pen price update. As at 30th December 2009, each pen costs S$ 5.15 with GST. I bought just one piece to try out.

The nib is pelleted at the tip and the writing experience is smooth. Nib is sensitive to provide good ink flow.

My pen comes with a fine point and I noticed that it is wider than the fine point of my Lamy AL-Star fountain pen. I expect Japanese nibs to be one size smaller than European nibs, but this Pilot Petit1 nib proves otherwise.

The original Pilot ink that comes with the pen is smooth flowing but exhibits feathering and a high tendency to bleed through writing paper.

The Pilot ink disappoints me. Any ink that needs good quality paper to perform only presents itself as a restriction to me as I cannot always dictate the quality of paper accessible to me.

I bought six additional cartridges (thus seven cartridges in total) and flushed all those ink away. Instead, I bought a bottle of Platinum ink and an injection syringe to fill those emptied cartridges with better performing Platinum ink.

  30. Went to Kinokuniya at Takashimaya today, found the following pens at the stationery section:

    – Pilot V-pen, with nibs labelled ‘Fine’ and ‘Medium’, and colours in black and red. Costs $3.40 with GST.

    – Pilot Petit1. Couldn’t see the nib labelling as most of the pens were taped up. The one I bought had a nib labelled ‘Fine’. Colours were pink, apple green, etc (but no black or blue which I wanted). Costs $5.15 with GST.

As pointed out by Benjamin Chin in the post of 31 Dec, the ink does tend to bleed through paper.

    – Platinum Preppy (sorry, didn’t take note of the nib size). Colours available were pink, green, violet etc (again no black or blue). Costs about $3.85 with GST.

    – Lamy pens were also on sale at the stationery counter, with one pen available for testing.

    – Stationery counter also has other fountain pens.

    – Couldn’t find any Sailor pen. Maybe these were sold out?

  31. Correction to the previous post:
‘Pilot Preppy’ is incorrect, should be ‘Platinum Preppy’.

(Editor, can you help me correct and delete this post?)

  32. Pilot Petit1 in blue, in clear blue, and in cobalt blue were available at Isetan at Scotts when I bought mine on 30th December 2009. Cannot recall seeing the black as I was hunting for blue. Only just a few left that day; so no guarantee for now.

The Platinum Preppy sold here are usually of the 0.3 mm fine point. I am aware Platinum produces Preppy in 0.5 mm medium point, but I have not come across any, yet.

The blue-back Preppy and the black Preppy are both sold out at this point of writing. Can consider yellow Preppy as the yellow colour nib gives the casual impression that the pen has a gold nib.

Sailor Ink Pen is available at Daiso at Plaza Singapura. Stocks come in and sold out fast but will re-stock. Nib is without pellet and hence writes “scratchy”.

Daiso also sells its very own “mini” fountain pen made in China. Some on display showed tiny “white flakes” (debris from machining process, maybe) in the transparent pen-cap. I bought one without those dirt. This pen is interesting :
    – There is no brand, no labelling on the barrel.
    – There is no marking on the clear steel nib but the ink flow I get suggests it has fine point.
    – It is supplied with a short ink cartridge but actually uses Sailor ink cartridge. I fit mine with blue.
    – The Sailor converter can be fitted to flush the feeder and nib during cleaning but the barrel is not long enough to house the converter. (Converter not included, of course. I use my own.)
    – With the pen-cap closed, it measures approximately 11.2 cm.
    – Very light. Very handy. Suitable even for shirts with small pockets.
    – Barrel looks as if it is opaque brownish-grey but when viewed against light, it is transparent enough to see the ink level in the cartridge.
    – Writes better than the Sailor Ink Pen.
    – Costs just S$ 2.00 with GST. You risk only very little money to try it.

  33. Pilot “Prera” Fountain Pen update as at 23 January 2010.

To have an idea of this range of pens, check this link :
    http://www.pilot.co.jp/products/pen/fountain/prera/index.html

I was told that new stock just came in on 20 January 2010 at Kinokuniya at Ngee Ann City.

I bought the new “brown” colour “Prera” in fine nib size on 23 January 2010 from Kinokuniya.

To have a closer look at the pictures of this model, check this link :

    Regarding prices update :

    a) My “Prera” model FPR-3SR-BN (Fine Nib) costs S$ 57.80. This pen comes with a free black ink cartridge. Converter sold separately.

    b) Con-50 Converter costs S$ 9.65.

    c) Pilot ink cartridges (1 box of 12 carts) costs S$ 7.70. I intend to flush the Pilot ink away and load these cartridges with Platinum blue-black ink for better performance.

  35. Hi

Just chanced upon this blog.. got a wierd question to ask..

I bought a Dupont pen from Kwang Guan in Bras Basah 6 years back…Now I am wondering whether this pen is genuine… I still have the certificate of authentication etc

I know it’s wierd to ask a qn like this 6 years after.. but it just suddenly dawned upon me that such places may not sell genuine pens at such a good price…

Does anyone know whether this shop carry genuine goods?

  36. I have provided a link to the current list of authorised S.T. Dupont retailers below.

You will notice that Kwang Guan is not on the list. However, this does NOT necessarily mean that they sell fakes.

If Kwang Guan does not take its pens from the sole agent in Singapore, then its name will not appear on the list.

Kwang Guan can be taking its pens from another supplier which is an authorised S.T. Dupont retailer. In this case, the pen is still genuine.

(Now you understand that it is not simply a case of saying that a pen is real or fake based on the shop name per se.)

If you want verification of your pen, you can bring it down to the sole agent :

    – S.T. DUPONT DISTRIBUTION (Sole agent in Singapore)
    1094 LOWER DELTA ROAD
    #08-01 MOTORWAY BUILDING
    SINGAPORE 169205
    TEL : 6733-0122
(Call to check on office hour & lunch-time, before you visit.)

  42. Thanks for the Daiso tip-off! I found the Platinium Riviere at Daiso Plaza Singapura today. It’s my first fountain pen and I think I’m getting addicted!

  43. Hi,
I had bought a box of 10 Hero 343 pens online hoping to get as much pattern paintings as possible.I had 5 duplicates-namely tiger, horse, swooping eagle, romantic ducks, and general floral pattern.would like to exchange for other patterns or friendly sale to pens affiocandos.
Understand Hero 343 is out of production many years ago.its vintage is 1990s,a ladylike size pen with unremovable converter just like the 336.It is remarkably smooth and write almost immediately out of the cardbox packaging despite its vintage.

  44. Mustafa dosent seem to sell the Birdie or Pilot 2A anymore, though the Pilot Tank eyedroppers and Hero 336’s are still selling. Found out by asking them.

  45. Does anyone know where I can get a Ohto Tasche or a Pilot Petit 1 in Singapore? Been looking at Funan and Kino Liang Court, but have not spotted them there.

  46. Just checked the Field Notes site and they say that it is sold at the following location:

    STRANGELETS
    87 Amoy Street, Singapore 069906

This shop was also featured in the Sunday Times (12 December).

  47. Went to Big Bookshop to try the Hero Ink– unfortunately, its blue-black ink looks like a diluted dull brown-grey on paper, with no blue at all. The shop also has Pelikan Royal Blue and Black ($4+), and also Parker Quink. And they sell Lamys too ($60+).

  48. Hello! I’m a fountain pen newbie! I bought my first FP 19 years ago! but only started to be intrigued by the finer appreciation of pens and papers just recently! I hope it’s not too addictive. I suspect though that it is more an impact on the wallet!!! Help! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  49. I’ve been to this shop at Upper Cross St, it looks a little old but they have good collections of pens. Anyone who is keen in Vintage Pens, be it Fountain or not, must visit Pek Kay Lee at Blk 34 Upper Cross Street #02-132. They have very good range especially the Mont Blanc Collectables. Some of them are even brand new!! Take note, its the one at the end of the building nearer to OG, NOT the stationery shop next to it.

  50. Hi Strangeknight

Thanks heaps for having this post. I love fountain pens and it’s fantastic to see the there is a growing group. Now I see yours as different cause this group is a group of people who love the pen and not the society thing that goes with big branded expensive things ONLY. Hero, cheap pilots, Lamy, then the better made ones. What’s important is that we appreciate affordable things that can start people going and allow people to grow into it, carry people through the years.

Maybe progress but never forget the simple joys of the early years.

I tend to go the Brass Basah Complex Fook Hing and Prestige Time to get my stuff. (Near office). Popular upstairs carries Pelikan ink (larger 62.5ml bottle) at only $3.30 (2012 price).

I’d love to check out Mustafa and Pek Kay Lee. Maybe get a pen for my sons to fiddle around with like I did in Primary 5. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, keep up the good work!

  51. Hi,

Can someone recommend Plain Notebooks that are available in Singapore? Moleskines are too expensive for me.

Previously, I have been using Miquelrius. They are not available in NBC anymore:(

Most bookstores only sell ruled notebooks.

    btw, are moleskines that good?

  52. Hi, I went to the Bras Basah popular this afternoon to buy a Vpen. They have marked up their price in their system to $2.80, but the stickers still show $2.50 as of 1pm 7/12/12.

  53. Hi,
I am looking for a fountain pen to improve my handwriting and hopefully dabble in some calligraphy.
Is the Lamy joy pen a good choice to start? (seeing it go for GBP25 on ebay, tried looking for it in the links provided in the faq but no avail)

  54. Hey! Quick question that’s totally off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My website looks weird when viewing from my iphone 4. I’m
trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to resolve this problem.
If you have any recommendations, please share.

    Cheers!

  55. Dear sir. We are retailers of Rhodia papers, pads and books, and Rhodia papers are known to be one of the best papers for fountain pens (better than Moleskin). I will like to pass you a complimentary book for testing and as a souvenir, and if you find it a good product do help us to promote on your website or Facebook. I hope to hear from you if you are willing to visit us at 89 Short Street B1-08 Singapore 188216, or visit our website at http://www.overjoyed.com.sg, where are planning to provide free delivery for Rhodia products so we can explore how to serve you better. 56. Hi, I went to Popular at Causeway Point and found the whole range colors of Platinum Preppy at $4.95 each but all are 0.3mm Fine. They also have Petite sold in sets of 3 or 5 different colors. I bought one Black Platinum, works great but still too fine for me.
If anyone drops by Bras Basah Popular, please drop a line here if they are selling the Medium.
    Cheers

  58. Latest update: Lamy safari fountain pens at Mustafa had a price increment from $34 to $42. The sales person told me the previous day was still $34, and today it’s $42. I am so “lucky” ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Fortunately, I could get my German boyfriend to get it for me and send it over, only S$28, and each box of ink cartridge is only S$1.50…

I’m a leftie, and I would like to ask what inks are fast-dying that are available in Singapore? Thanks…

  59. Tokyu Hands (Westgate) sells the Platinum Preppy @ S$3.40. They also got Lamy Safari, some Platinum foutain pens, Pilot Custom 74 iirc. They also got the CON-50 Converter @ S$15. Kokuyo and Maruman stuff can be found there too.
